Mount Washington Cog Railway, is one of the last remaining coal run cog train in the US. That is about to change as they are converting to diesel-powered trains to hall tourist up Mount Washington.
They still employ 5 coal trains and there are advocates for both sides. There are the environment friendly and cost effective diesel-powered train on one side and history buffs for the coal trains on the other side.
The coal trains have been in use since the Sylvester Marsh began running trains up the 6,288-foot climb on July 3, 1869.
This year the new diesel powered trains are slowly replacing them.
The original coal train is readied for the climb.
