Asmara, Eritrea.November 2002.Birhan Aim Hospital (Light to the Eye Hospital)..In the Fred Hollows factory the environment is extremely sterilized to manufacture the lens to replace the cataract eye lens. The factory produces 200,000 a year in 45 different sizes. The factory produces and sells them for an average profit price of $7 a lens. The same lens in the west sells for as much as $100 to $150 dollars. The lenses are sold primarily to third world countries in Asia and Africa. Machines serialize the lens.
