Kiev, Ukraine .December 29, 2004..Opposition candidate Viktor Yuschinco supporters block government buildings to prevent Viktor Yanukovych from meeting his cabinet. In a second round of voting the polls show Viktor Yushchenko, the opposition candidate, in a strong lead over Viktor Yanukovich with 98% of the vote counted. ..The first round of voting was considered fraudulent when the ruling president Viktor Yahukovich won and the opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko lost. ..Several hundred thousand Ukrainians took to the streets of Kiev and held daily rallies on Maidan Independence Square. The protests lasted nearly a month before the first vote was declared invalid and a new round of elections held on December 26, 2004. ..The demonstrations would come to be known as the "Orange Revolution" after the color of the opposition party.
