Kiev, Ukraine.December 26, 2004..Opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko takes the stage on Maidan Independence Square as thousands of Orange flag waving supporters rally to his side. Election polls show him in a strong lead just hours after the polling stations close. He is joined on stage by his wife Kathy, two children and his political partner Yulia Timoshenko. ..The first round of voting was considered fraudulent when the ruling president Viktor Yahukovich won and the opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko lost. ..Several hundred thousand Ukrainians took to the streets of Kiev and held daily rallies on Maidan Independence Square. The protests lasted nearly a month before the first vote was declared invalid and a new round of elections held on December 26, 2004. ..The demonstrations would come to be known as the "Orange Revolution" after the color of the opposition party.
