Niagara Falls sits on the international boundary between the United States of America and Canada and is visited by ten million tourists each year. It is one of the United States' top ten tourist destinations.
The city's economy was originally based around the power generated by the waterfall. This cheap and abundant power source was the driving force behind the rise of area industry.
The city, had a population of 100,000 people at its peak, has declined by 50%, as industries shut down and people left for the employment opportunities of the South and West. The unemployment rate in the City of Niagara Falls was around 12 percent as of May 2009.
